A Holter Monitor is a small wearable device that records the electrical activity of your heart, over a set period, to detect any abnormal heart rhythms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

Your doctor might request a Holter monitor to:

  • Check for signs of irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias).
  • Evaluate your heart rhythm over a set period.
  • Determine the cause of unexplained fainting.
  • Evaluate a heart condition that increases the risk of arrhythmias.

You can eat normally and take your medications, at their usual times, before the test.  We recommend patients:

  • Wear a loose, comfortable two-piece outfit.
  • Bathe or shower in the days (or hours) before your test. You may not be able to bathe, shower or swim during your testing period (dependant on the type of monitor you receive).

The technician will explain the process and attach the Holter monitor:

  • Your technician will place electrodes (sensor stickers) on your chest. These electrodes detect your heartbeat.
  • If you have hair on your chest, areas may be shaved to ensure the electrodes stick.
  • Wires attached to the electrodes connect to the Holter monitor recording device.
  • Once your monitor is fitted, you can leave the clinic and return to your everyday activities.
  • After the prescribed time, you can remove the monitor and cuff and return it to the clinic or as instructed by the technician.

The resulting ECG is interpreted by a doctor (internist, family physician, cardiologist and/or surgeon).

Don't take the monitor off

The monitor should be worn during the entire recording period, even while sleeping. The only exception is for bathing (see below).

Water can damage the monitor

Do not swim or bathe for the entire time you're wearing the monitor. You'll be shown how to remove and reattach the electrodes if you need to bathe.
